David Tyson was born on September 14, 1959 in Philadelphia Pa. His parents, Laura Lee Tyson and Edward Lewis Harvey raised him in a house filled with music. When he was a young child, his home was filled with the singing of his mom, his aunt, or his brother Ron Tyson of The Temptations. His mother loved to sing when she prepared the special Sunday meals. The house was always filled with family. His grandfather Perry Tyson (PUGGS) lived with them as well as his aunt and uncles. One of Dave's mother's favorite songs to sing was "What a difference a day makes". She had a beautiful voice. His brother Ron Tyson always had his friends in the basement of their home, singing and performing Temptations songs. One day Ron Tyson formed his own group called "The Ethics" and Dave was around 11 years old at the time. On the weekends, his mother would take him, his brother Perry, sisters Stephanie, Annette, & Veronica, and some of the neighborhood kids to the World Famous "Uptown Theatre" in Philadelphia, to see his brother's group perform, as well as groups like The Manhattans, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Mad Ladds, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, and The Delphonics. Dave was so inspired by all of his musical surroundings and seeing the different groups perform, he decided to form his own group. They would sing in the basement while performing for neighbors as the audience. There were several entertainers that lived in his neighborhood. Butch Robinson of Breakwater lived next door and Frankie Beverly of Maze lived down the street.
Dave always wanted to hang with his brother Ron. They were very close and Dave looked up to his big brother. He wanted to perform like Ron did but unfortunately at that time, he was too young. When Dave got older and was discharged from the military, they gave him the postion of "RUNNER" for the group. He would run errands, get food, coffee, drinks, or pick up someone from the airport who needed a ride. He absolutely LOVED every minute of what he was doing. Not only was he hanging out with his brother Ron and The Ethics but he was also in the company of people like Norman Harris, the late Harold Melvin, & Alan Felder. He was very influenced by all of them. He would sit, watch, and learn how they wrote songs and how the creativity took over. One day it all came to an end. Ron was called to join The Temptations. Dave was no longer able to spend time and travel with him. Dave was devastated. Although he was very happy for the opportunity that was given to Ron, Dave missed him very much. He was at a loss as to what to do next. So he jumped right back into the music. He hooked up with the multi-talented performer/producer Eugene "Lambchop" Curry and did alot of studio sessions and wrote alot of songs. He eventually formed his own group called "Final Touch". They won several talent contests held in and around the Philadelphia area. The group was off to a great start until one day Ron called him and told him that The Manhattans needed a first tenor. With the help of Legendary choreographer Cholly Atkins and his wife Mae Atkins, and Blue Lovette, Dave met with the group and auditioned and he was IN! That was 11 years ago today and he's still performing with The Manhattans all over the world.
He was devastated when his brother left but now that he's on the road with The Manhattans and Ron is on the road with The Temptations, they meet all the time, sometimes performing on the same shows. He is elated because they have made their family, friends, and fans proud and they both are fulfilling their life long dreams on the road and on stage singing with such legendary groups. What more could anyone ask for?
Dave is proud and honored to be a part of a group with such legendary status as "The Manhattans" and after eleven years, he is still grateful for the wonderful opportunity.
